Is your site ready for the holiday season?

Days to Christmas:
It is now time to start improving the holiday customer experience at your site.
Just a few Holiday e-commerce ideas...:

   Shipping
Holiday time makes shipping a much more important part of buying decisions. Customers want to make sure their gifts will be in on time.
  • Calendar Interface
Use a calendar interface to provide a quick view of the various deadlines for shipping in order to receive an item in time for Christmas.
  • Cutoff Date for Holiday Delivery
Provide a chart with a clear breakdown of when an order needs to be placed for holiday shipping, you can also include the actual time of day when the cutoff occurs, this is more helpful than saying "shipping in 2-5 days". Mention it when holiday shipping is no longer available.
  • Holiday Shipping Information on Product Page
Inline shipping information is a good idea because not every customer will click through to a page dedicated to holiday shipping information.
  • Shipping Charges
Provide a clear link to shipping costs and a chart to clarify charges if needed. Explain if your site charges by the type of item, size of item, total order price, weight, or something else. If you make people wait until checkout to discover the answer, they will probably leave before buying...
  • International Business
Assist consumers in converting prices into their own currencies (using a currency converter). Provide consumers with information about the places/countries you deliver to, what forms of delivery you can offer them and what the differences in costs will be.
  • Ordering Deadline
Provide the exact time - to the hour - for ordering deadlines (if your business is international: do not forget about the different time zones in the world).

   Returns
The Holiday season always results in a lot more returns...
Be clear to your customers about your return policy.
  • Return Policy
How clear is your site’s holiday return policy? And can people easily find the link to this page? Provide detailed return instructions with dates and costs. Customers will have return questions like these:
How much time do I have to return my purchase?
Will I get a credit or cash back?
How long will it take to process my refund? etc.
  • Extending Deadlines
Extend return deadlines during holiday season, and promote it of course:
    "risk-free holiday shopping".
  • Returning at a Local Store
Online shoppers enjoy being able to return an item at a local store. Use brick and mortar locations as an advantage over online competitors. Offer immediate in-store credit for online items that are returned.

   Gift Finders
Gift finders let shoppers find the right gift by selected criteria.
  • Shop by Price Range
Your gift finder can offer a few different price ranges.
  • Shop by Interest
Offer a variety of links oriented around a gift recipient's lifestyle.
  • Shop by Gender or Age
Offer links to gifts specifically for the recipient's gender and their personality type or to certain age groups.
  • Multiple Criteria
Let customers use multiple criteria to reduce the number of gift items displayed.
Criteria like price, gender, interests, lifestyle, occasion, type of recipient, (minimum, and maximum) price, etc. will save shoppers time and improve the odds that they will find the item they want. The result will be a highly targeted gift finder.

   Gift Cards and Certificates
Gift cards and certificates let the gifter save time and let the giftee choose their own gift.
  • Different Looks and Occasions
Offer gift cards and certificates with different looks. You can offer both a standard gift card and a occasion gift card. Let people choose a certificate for the appropriate occasion, holidays like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa as well as non-holiday events like a birthday, graduation, or anniversary.
  • Add to Shopping Cart
Let customers buy gift cards via the usual checkout process; allow them to place a gift card inside a shopping cart alongside other items.
  • Boxed Gift Cards
Offer boxed gift cards and certificates for a more elegant presentation.
  • Business Gift Cards
Sell gift cards targeted at corporate/business customers alongside regular consumer gift cards, it is a great way to thank clients or reward employees.
  • Online or in-Store
Let customers choose between online certificates and paper gift cards.
  • Promote
Offer a special promotion to make gift cards more attractive to customers.

   Gift Wrap
Wrap and kits, another way to make holiday gift giving easier for customers.
  • Pre-wrapped
Offer pre-wrapped gifts, no need for customers to worry about the wrapping hassle.
  • Sneak Preview
Provide a sneak preview of your wrap(s), display your gift wrap(s) on different objects. Let customers choose the color of their paper or ribbon.
  • Gift Kits
Offer gift kits, a cheap and flexible alternative for customers who want to wrap their own presents. You could offer a kit that includes items like a box, tissue, and ribbon.
Offer complimentary unassembled boxes upon request.
  • Change before shipping
Customers sometimes want to change order details after checking out. Make it possible for customers to add or change a gift’s wrap or note if the order hasn't been shipped yet.

   Holiday Makeover for your website
Give your images, copy, and layout a makeover for the holidays.
  • Change of Style
"Holidize" your home page copy and your logo.
  • Categories on Home Page
Offer gift finder categories directly on the home page.
  • Large Image on Home Page
Use one large image on your home page to create an atmosphere.
  • Shipping on Home Page
Prominently display holiday shipping information on your home page.
  • Low Cost Items on Home Page
Lure value-conscious customers in by emphasizing low cost items on the home page.

   Miscellaneous
Assorted holiday ideas.
  • Stocking Offers
Offer a special category for stocking-friendly items: offer a selection of ornaments and small gifts on one page.
  • Last Minute Pickup in-Store
On the days before Christmas, push "buy online and pickup in-store" of items as a last minute alternative.
  • Holiday help section
Add a holiday help section with tips dealing specifically with common holiday issues like shipping and ordering during the holidays, returns, gift wrapping, etc.
  • Gift Sets
Combine products to create gift sets, give shoppers the option of quickly purchasing all the necessary items to make a gift set.
  • Hiding the price tag
Offer a checkbox that allows shoppers to hide the price on the invoice that is shipped with the product.
